Project Spotlight: Charlotte Douglas International Airport Roadway Expansion

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CDIA) in Charlotte, NC is in the midst of a 3 year, $50 million project to expand both levels of the roadway in front of the main terminal. The completed expansion will widen the roadway from 3 lanes to 8 lanes between the terminal and the hourly parking deck. Upon completion, buses and shuttles will use the inner three lanes while passenger cars will use the outer five lanes. Construction began in winter 2015 and will be completed by summer 2018.

Flatiron Construction-Southeast Division was contracted to build the elevated roadway bridge and related structures for the project. Of particular concern for Flatiron and Rich Weimer, Flatiron’s job superintendent was selecting a CDIA Engineering Drawing productive formwork system to handle the 3 - 980’ long bents (caps) that would support the upper level roadway.

Form Tech designed 26’ long rolling shoring tables constructed of high capacity Ischebeck-Titan aluminum legs and aluminum stringers combined with standard aluminum joists to support the bottom of the bents and the custom formwork above. The custom formwork design for the inverted “T-shaped” bents was constructed of aluminum beams backed with Symons Soldier Beams. The high strength Soldier Beams required minimal tie locations through the offset style formwork design and contributed to a great finish on the final product.

When it comes to Form Tech’s service, no job is too big or too small as each project is handled with care from bid to the final concrete placement.
